This art was colored entirely by using the original MacPaint swatches from 1984. I considered creating the entire piece of art in that program but didn't want the pixelation to be visible everywhere. Instead, I recreated all the swatches and used them throughout the art. As the years go by I've learned to trust my instincts more as an artist. I envisioned David Lynch in this style and I translated that image to paper without thinking about the why. It just felt correct to me. It was only after I finished the art that I reflected more on the why. I realized I associate a certain kind of a burgeoning creativity from early Mac art software and that that time period overlapped with when Lynch created some of his most memorable work. The stark black and white swatches seemed like an interesting way to wink at Eraserhead. The swatches themselves almost feel like tiny Rorschach tests to me. Sometimes the braided patterned swatch feels like the criss-cross of an apple pie crust and other days it reads as some sort of menacing containment fence. I remember sitting in the computer lab at Brushy Creek Elementary as a child being completely transfixed by the first version of MacPaint. Whether I was creating a brick wall pattern to write endless graffiti on or steadying my hand to make a line drawing of Yoda using only a mouse, I knew this was a world I had to explore.
