This art was entirely colored using the original MacPaint swatches from 1984. I considered creating the entire piece of art in that program but didn't want the pixelation to be visible everywhere. Instead, I recreated all the swatches and used them throughout the art. As the years go by I've learned to trust my instincts more as an artist. I envisioned David Lynch in this style and I translated that image to paper without thinking about the why. It just felt correct to me. It was only after I finished the art I reflected more on the why. I realized that I associate a certain kind of a burgeoning creativity from early Mac art software with the time period Lynch created some of his strongest work. The stark black and white swatches seemed like an interesting way to wink at Eraserhead. The swatches themselves almost feel like tiny Rorschach tests to me. Sometimes the braided patterned swatch feels like the criss-cross of an apple pie crust and other days it reads as some sort of menacing containment fence. I remember sitting in the computer lab at Brushy Creek Elementary as a child being completely transfixed by the first version of MacPaint. Whether I was creating a brick wall pattern to write endless graffiti on or steadying my hand to make a line drawing of Yoda using only a mouse I knew this was world I had to explore.

This tee is printed on a super soft American Apparel tri-blend track tee with my friends at Industry Printing in Austin, TX. I bought samples awhile back of literally every tee on the market and determined that this particular one fits and feels best. It's well worth the price of a blank.

***If you are ordering 3XL-5XL the t-shirt will be a Gildan Hammer Tee. The reason for this is that AA doesn't make a size bigger than 2XL. The big dogs told me they like Hammer Tees so that's what I went with.***
