The Cure - Miro Lovecats

Lovecats, take two!
To be honest, I’d love to create an entire series of cats drawn in the styles of different artists. For this one, I zeroed in on Joan Miró! Part of the reason was that I thought Robert Smith’s drawings from Wish resembled Miró’s lines so much.
At the time, I didn’t know the art would be paired with “Edinburgh,” but Robert saw a connection between the patterns in the cats and tartan fabric, which is often associated with Scotland. He also suggested changing the blues to greens to help highlight that connection.
Miró was definitely the main inspiration, but I was also looking at an illustrator named Jim Flora for this one. He created all these great jazz record covers for Columbia Records in the ’40s and ’50s. One of them was called Mambo for Cats. Even all the way back in 2004, when I was just getting started making gig posters, I created a piece for Yo La Tengo that was heavily inspired by Flora’s work.
If I get to do one more in the series, I’d try one through the lens of Kandinsky. Maybe Paul Klee, too!
